Who are you?
I am bunPeiris. I am a schoolmaster of English language and English literature [in fact, it is literature in English] with a B.A. in English [CINEC] bolstered by a postgraduate diploma in TESL [Teaching English as a Second Language] from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. I have been teaching English language and literature in English for Cambridge OL and AL at leading international schools in Colombo for more than a decade. Over and above my formal teaching in schools, I have been tutoring Cambridge, Edexcel and Sri Lanka’s National syllabuses for OL and AL at location in Kandana as well as on-line. To make a long story short, that’s who I am..

What do you do?
I do teach Cambridge, Edexcel and Sri Lanka National OL/AL English language and English literature. Then again teaching English literature and language is not merely my occupation: it has been my vocation; it has been my little joy. It has been my occupation for over a decade since I commenced teaching students following OL and AL Cambridge, Edexcel, and Sri Lanka National Language and literature at International schools in Colombo. It has been my vocation since I began my private tutoring of English language and literature in English at Kandana. It has been my little joy since the upsurge of both of those situations and then again since I launched on-line publications of literary commentaries on works of literature for my website or www.bunpeiris.org or www.mycambridgeliterature.com. That’s what I do.

How do you teach Cambridge English language?
I do teach with a total consciousness of the flow of school English syllabuses from Cambridge OL [1123] to Cambridge AL [9093]. Beginning with the examinations in the year 2024, Cambridge OL English language [1123] calls for students to develop skills to grasp how writers use language to create effects and influence the reader. AS and A syllabus [9093] emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive understanding of how the texts are crafted to create meaning and impact. As such, in the process and in effect, OL [1123] syllabus has now been streamlined to Cambridge AS and A English language [9093], seemingly the finest A-level English language syllabus. Syllabus 9093 is oriented in the triple of foundational features of speech and writing, namely, Language, Form and Structure. It is such a streamline that, in the end, brings about a higher level of articulation, eloquence, and erudition in writing and speech to raise the quality of your life in terms of professionalism. That is the supremacy of excellence that you would secure in the long run.

Then again, in the short cut, the immediate advantage is that a decent grade [B and above] in AS [first year] alone, not to mention A [second year], is good enough for a great number of universities in affluent countries, in terms of proof of proficiency in English Language, for admittance to their prestigious halls. Such is the supremacy of results in OL to AL streamlining, it paves the way to produce high-caliber undergraduates, the genuine scholars equipped with superior command in English language to compose assignments, theses, and make presentations with greater confidence in university degree courses.  The confidence in you, that you could write a supreme report and make a superior presentation any time, any day, anywhere in the world in your field of expertise, that would transform your life.
It is with such a view in my mind that I do teach.

How do you teach Edexcel English Language?
Then again, “Edexcel IGCSE (9-1) English language A” [OL], most possibly the finest OL English language syllabus in UK, is oriented in the triple foundational features of Language, Form and Structure nearly on the same level as Cambridge AS of syllabus 9093. Paper 1 [60%] as well as paper 2 [40%] call for students to develop skills to analyze how writers use linguistic and structural devices to achieve their effects.
It is with such a view in my mind that I do teach.

Why should it be English Language and Literature in English rather than any other language, such as French and German in Cambridge and Edexcel in OL/AL?

English language [how to communicate effectively on the world stage] and Literature in English [how to live and how to engage in analytical and critical thinking and then compose a thesis] are not only an essential life skill but also a vital transferable skill that underpin professionalism in all fields. You are called upon to write reports in English; you are called upon to make presentations in English; you are called upon to match your higher expertise in your trade with superior command in English.

Such is the political and technological situation of the earth, the global village of thousands of apocalyptic nuclear warheads and zillions of divine microchips. Today, English language has become the peerless global language of aviation and transportation, diplomacy and trade, commerce and business, research and medicine, science and technology, information technology and digital industry.

In the end, your path to professional success in your field lies in your competence to construct and convey meaning in speech and written language, matching your style and tone to your audience and your purpose.

As such, all students who plan to excel in universities, perform well above the rest, and enjoy an edge over the common crowd with a higher level of professionalism in their field of expertise ought follow “Edexcel IGCSE (9-1) English language A” or Cambridge OL English Language [1123] plus Cambridge AS [first year], if not both AS & A [9093].

Who is equipped to teach the above syllabuses with a view of “A” grades?
As Professor Jordan Peterson, as I say, the professor of all the rest of the professors, or as others call him, a public intellectual, says, in order to teach, in order to make a lecture, in order to make a presentation in such a way so as to see the emergence of fruitful discussion among the instructor and the students, the instructor ought to be already enjoying the luxury of three times the proficiency required for the situation. Effective teaching or tutoring above OL and AL English language syllabuses that aims to impart a higher level of expertise in foundational features of speech and writing, namely Language, Form and Structure should ideally come from an instructor who has studied the higher concepts of these foundational features, namely, Discourse Analysis at undergraduate level, Critical Discourse Analysis at post graduate level and since then has continued to be steeped in the application of the same in the field.

How do you teach Literature in English?
As in Language, as in Literature: Language, Form and Structure

No matter the type of text, analysis of same could take shape in terms of language, form and structure. Hence a work of literature too can be analyzed with the same approach. And then the cumulative effect of all literary devices and language techniques could bring about the meaning, theme or moral message of the  of the work of literature.

Language in a work of literature refers to the overall use of words and the way they are structured to convey meaning, including the choice of vocabulary, sentence structure, and overall writing style.

While language encompasses the broader use of words and structure, literary devices are the specific tools within the language that writers use to enhance their storytelling or message or argument or discussion or persuation and convey deeper meanings.

Literary devices are generally more complex and involve a greater degree of creativity and imagination. They are often used to create a specific mood or atmosphere, or to convey a particular message or theme. Some common literary devices are similes, metaphors, personification, juxtaposition, alliteration, assonance, foreshadowing, irony and symbolism.

Language techniques are more focused on the mechanics of writing. They are generally more complex and involve a greater degree of creativity and imagination as such used to improve the clarity, coherence, and effectiveness of a piece of writing. They are often used to create a specific mood or atmosphere or to convey a particular message or theme. Some common language techniques include : parallelism, repetition, and contrast.

Explaining now slowly, now on the double, then gently, then raise the level…. The kids are on the game…Writer’s use of language and effect on the reader. Bring example, examples and more examples. Okey, okey, here comes, here lands, here crashes in planeloads, great wheels screech, fumes and inflames.
I “hurled” half a brick at the devil of cat. It ran for its very life with my nice piece of fried fish. King fish for a crafty cat. I want to be a black cat tonight so that I can steal and eat as much as I like. No, No, No, better to become a vampire, then I can slide down the great vertical walls in great stealth, slaughter and devour wholesale whole lamb calves as I like. I am fed up of my mother’s retail, single slice of nice piece of kingfish. Kingfish for a cat?….. too much.. unbearable.  While watchin’ the tremblin’ spoon mounted with glittering green jelly, I realized the devil is still lurking on the other side of wall. Now it’s peeping into my room.  With my legs stretched right up and deep on the desk wide, my plate on my lap not so wide, my eyes wide open on the You tube, I carried on having my lunch sans my nice slice of fried fish. The kid. It just stopped short of his mouth. Luminous green jelly tumbled off his spoon. I chalked on my mouthful. Frozen. Salmon is no substitute for kingfish. Salmon fails to console me. … what a loss. …  …Jeesus Christ Superstar, this son of a bitch, this bastard is ferocious, enormous and carnivorous to the very paws enormous…… Oh!  How can the two kids make an escape now?  Will they be ripped apart to ribbons of tender red meat? Or will they be eaten alive? It’s peeping into my room…., no, not T Rex, that goddamnitman cat …what, now my salmon too?,… don’t you ever dare, you bloody hyena, shame to the cat family, the shameless thief, the black sheep of the great cat family.… Didn’t you have enough for your life-time with that half a brick landin’ on your head? Still peeping as if waiting for the other half of the brick.  Really, indeed, where’s the other non-bloodied half?  Didn’t you have enough with my whole nice slice of fried fish? You Don devil, I’ll have you roasted on a spit, you …   .…… It was only yesterday it gave birth to no less than four tiniest kittens ever. To be or not to be…. kind. Com’n man…. Isn’t she a mother. So? So what, didn’t your mother just bring salmon to you?  She too must take salmon to her kittens. You stooopid, You half-baked idiot, be. Be. Santa Maria, Nina, Pinta, Captain General Christo Columbus, (praise be to him, he gave birth to the nuclear bomber) be kind. Tossed. I “tossed” a piece of salmon to the poor creature.  But then my mother too must have …What the blazes..?… By Jupitor, Thundering typhoons, blue blistering barnacles, T. Rex is on the hunt.. hunting little kids? Whatstupid, How many decades have you been picking up half a carcass of lamb calves from the souk every Friday? So, how can you find fault with I, the almighty T. Rex having human calves sans tomato sauce? Relentless, remorseless, merciless… Com’n man, these are human kids, not lamb calves. Getting close, closer, closest……No, No, No….

How do you teach Literature in English?
Join the discussion. Get sunk and then swim. What is the difference between story and plot? What is the difference between plot summary and plot interpretation? How do you analyze the relationship between the main plot and a subplot? What are the purposes of literary elements and literary techniques? What are the writer’s literary devices and reader’s literary devices? How do you recognize and appreciate ways in which writer use language, structure and style to achieve his intended effects on the reader?
How do you shift from mere appreciation of a literary text to critical literary appreciation? How do you engage in literary analysis & what is the purpose? What is the difference between topic and theme and how do you arrive at the theme? How do you compare the theme and the moral message? How do you develop an interpretation of a work of literature (drama, poetry and prose) and what is the purpose? How do you present critical appreciations or your individual responses to literary texts composed in different forms and in different periods and cultures?
How do you know your individual response is valid? What are the differences between Critical Literary Appreciation, Literary Criticism, and Literary Theory? Why should there be a Literary theory at all?
